Homeopathy in Veterinary Medicine
Homeopathy was founded on a basic unifying principle “like is cured by like”. This premise has remained the foundation of Homeopathy since the early 1800’s.
Conventional drugs are generally used to take the place of normal body processes such as hormones or steroids. They are used to inhibit body responses such as painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs and antihistamines. Or finally, to weaken or kill bacteria and cancer cells such as antibiotics and chemotherapy.
Homeopathy works with the patient’s inner vital force, to enhance the body’s ability to dispel any disease. The basic theory is that a disease can be cured by careful use of medicine that produces similar symptoms when given to a healthy individual. Thus, homeopathy treatments work with, rather than against’ the body’s own efforts to regain health.
Specially prepared remedies used in homeopathy contain minute doses of herbs, minerals, or animal products. These substances are diluted and repeatedly agitated numerous times so that only minuscule amounts actually enter the patient’s body. This is a big leap of faith from a Western Medicine perspective.
That being said…..
Homeopathy is an extremely valuable tool in Veterinary Medicine especially in integrated medicine. Some of my biggest ‘WOW moments’ and true miracles have come about through the use of homeopathy. Inevitably when I walk into a room and a particular remedy jumps to mind it is the right one and will have a very positive affect.
Homeopathy is such a gentle form of medicine that even the most sensitive of animals can still tolerate homeopathy and in extremely compromised animals sometimes it is the only type of medicine they will tolerate.
I use homeopathy in two primary ways.
Classical homeopathy, where a single remedy is chosen that matches the array of symptoms that the animal has presented with. For example Apis Mellifica being used to treat bee stings and other insect bites.
Homotoxicology is a method of treatment using combination homeopathic remedies. Homotoxicology works to give the body a gentle ‘push’ in healing direction. It is useful for inbalanced intra-cellular and extra-cellular drainage, immunomodulation and organ functional regulation. Essentially the entire concept of detoxification is the root of Homotoxicology. Traumeel is an example of homotoxicology.
